Day 2 : 2008 Olympics Symbol in Senado Square, Macau

The Beijing Olympics 2008 are around the corner. And we had a pleasant surprise when we were at the Senado Square in Macau. I trust one of their promotional efforts was to feature the following Olympic Symbols for China.

Since I don't read Chinese, I wasn't sure if this was a competition on who will design and create the best Olympic Symbol for Beijing Olympics 2008.

Check it out .. i am sure you will be facsinated like me.

This was a Banner introducing this Exhibition.

As you can see there were many many Olympic Symbols.
I only picked those that i liked!! Hope u like the ones i picked.

The exhibition was out in the open at Senado Square.
And the Exhibits were in twos .. and it went on for quite a bit!

I like this Olympic Symbol, the chrome setting
surrounding the man with the Olympics symbol on top.

This was really unique too. Chrome figurines running thru a boxed frame.

Here's another view of it from the Front. Cool huh?

This was kinda weird. All the people's heads stuck together!
Hmm .. a Ball of Head?
Ball of People?
People with Same Mind Stick Together?
(as in Birds of the Feather Stick Together)

This was super unique. You couldn't see the figurine's face.
His back was to you, and he was looking into a concave mirror.

As you can see i had to be creative to take this shot! :)

Umm .. this was a team of Basket ball players
dunking the basket ball into the Hoop.
Strangely they were stacked on top of each other!

Umm .. as u can see i like Chrome.
But have no clue what these are!!
The Sydney Opera House ? hmm ...

Okies... a man flying off a horse with a Mc D's background.
Yup...the Mc D's background is focus of attention :)

I like this shot .. this super thin figurine
.......... Running ........

This is just CUTE!!

I couldn't remember why i took this shot.
Guess it was uniquely different from the rest!

This was quite spooky.
Three Men, in dark gowns doing a kung fu stance!!

I like this .. a guy and girl holding up the Olympics Rings!!

Two ladies Kung Fu-ing around a round base.

As i said, I hope u enjoyed the Olympic Symbols i chose from the Senado Square. :)

Day 2 : Morning Visit to St Paul's Ruins & Senado Square

It is so irritating that there is no free wireless connection in Macau. Or none that I could find that is.

Lim brought me out walking in the early morning of our second day. Promised me a great local breakfast if I followed him out.

We passed the Mc Donald's in Macau .. but he said .. nope this is not it!!

And off we went ...... in search of this awesome breakfast trip at seven in the morning. And guess what he bought .... MAN THOU! (or Pau)

Reached this square in Macau called the “Pan Sui Chi” … which in direct translation means Fountain Pond! [Senado Square]

Anyway … we saw the Oldest Post Office in Macau .. which dates back to more than a hundred years old. Curiously the superstructure stood the test of time and its still standing strong in the square.

Apparently the above alley is very famous for HK actors and actresses when they do filming. But no such recollection of this alley. Rings a Bell anyone?

There was also an exhibition of the Beijing Olympics 2008, which really had interesting symbolic models of the forth coming Olympics. [Click on the Link, cos tons of Photos]

Lim took me on a wild goose chase. We were suppose to go to the St Paul’s ruins. But after walking like 20 minutes and all UPHILL!! (Mind you the uphill was like 60 degrees gradient) with uneven foot steps, which made the journey even tougher.

Lim kept saying, yeah this way, lets follow the students (tons of school children walking to school) as he remembered a school next to the St Paul Ruins. Believe it or not, we took the wrong turn and ended up at the Macau Fortress. Which was like 100 feet higher than the St Paul’s ruins.

I was complaining non stop (due to the high gradient of steps) and the wrong turn, but Lim just said .. check out the view …. Isn’t it gorgeous?

When you look thru the eyes of the Telescope ...

Well the air was cold … it should have been at least 13 degrees Celsius, and we were on top of a hill. Nevertheless the view was breathtaking as you could see the whole of Macau from atop the Fortress.

It was also at the Fortress, where we found the mistake of the wrong turn. So Lim said … “See you can see the St Paul’s ruin from another angle!”
“Apa-lah!!!” Was my retort!

The above picture is the infamous St Paul's Ruins of Macau.

That's the place we were supposedly to be walking to!!!!

See a Canon... yes .. confirm its a Fortress!!

Hmm from the top of the Fortress, i saw this guy

doing exercise balancing on a Wired Fence.

Wow!!! .. talk about good stomach muscles!

We passed the Macau Museum ... and then

Finally, after checking out the entire Fortress, we journeyed to the ruins,

Took a couple of pics like a typical tourist.

And then finally made our way to the Wong Chi Kei Noodle shop. We had great won ton noodle (mine dry, Lim’s soup based) and it was sumptuous. The founder of Wong Chi Kei learnt the skills of making noodles from the Hua-Yuan master in the 1940s in Canton.

So if you guys ever make it to Macau, go to the Senado Square
be sure to look for Wong Chi Kei Noodle Shop!!!!

DAY 1 : Journey to Macau

This is the SECOND MOST longest journey I’ve taken in my life!!!

I woke up at 5.15am. Waited for the car ride which also picked up Cindy and then Anne. We reached KLIA at about 6.15am in the morning. We checked in at the counter of China Airlines. Got a shock of my life when I found out that we were on a 3 hours 20 minutes flight on a Boeing 737!! I was expecting at least a Boieng 747! Might as well flown with Air Asia rite?

Anyway .. we flew to Hong Kong ….. tried sleeping most of the way.(Hmmm .. have you ever thought how uncomfortable is it for an over 6foot (tall) guy fit into a tiny Boeing 737 seat for three hours without moving?) Well .. anyway .. we survived the journey. And as u can see from the pic .. my frens were sleeping too.

We arrived at the Hong Kong International Airport …. Which was super huge and filled with tons of people. I think it took us more than 20 minutes to clear the immigration. We then had to walk to the Taxi Stand which was like half a kilometer which was at the other end of the super long airport. And we caught two taxis to the China Ferry Terminal.

After arriving at the China Ferry Terminal, we hunted a bit and found a Ferry that would take us to Macau. We ate in my most FAV place .... Mc Donald's!!

Hehehe .. i didn't think this was the fav for the rest, but we had only 20 mins to spare, before the next ferry took off, so i guess a Mc Curry Pork would be the best lah . .since there's no pork in Malaysia!! :) yum yum

Finally after a one hour ride in the Ferry, we arrived at our final destination for the day, MACAU!! Thankfully they had shuttle services, and all six of us made it to Mandarin Oriental, Macau.

The room was decent, we were sharing rooms.
I had the pleasure of sharing the room with Lim .. our IT Manager.

Here a quick view of the room before we messed it up! :)

At the Lobby of the Mandarin Oriental Macau, is this grand staircase which decends from the 1st floor of the hotel to central of the lobby area.

Will not bore you guys with our work and stuff. So after all the work and meetings that was done. This is US!! The 6 of us which came one day earlier to meet with the Macau Team.
On the Left : Cindy, Anne, Lim
On the Right : Me, Jess, Ms Teh

We had our first dinner in a Macanese & Portugese joint. Not too bad .. a little pricey
.. but nice experience.

After dinner, it was suggested that we would go grab some coffee to discuss further.
Our tour guide brought us to SANDS.
This is the car entrance to Sands, with lots of lights and long and impressive driveway.

Unbeknown to me, Sands was not really a hotel but a full fledge Casino!!
We entered, made our way to the third floor, where we sipped Cappucino, Coffee and i ordered my Teh Ais, sat and looked at the almost full casino on a Wednesday nite.
We also noticed that nearly every table in the Casino was packed with tons and tons and tons of Chinese. I guess the gaming sector is the no.1 contributor in Macau. There were just heaps of gamblers practically giving their money to Macau's economy.
So that was the first DAY of our trip to Macau. Long, tiring ... and slept really early.
(realized that if u are not into gambling, there's nothing else that Macau offers)

Unique Plant Species at Rimba Ilmu

We had a Fun day today planting trees in a forest reserve in Universiti Malaya, called Rimba Ilmu.

Check out some of these super coool looking flower species caught on my Canon Power Shot.

tree05.jpgtree51.jpg

Here are some really rare samples of plants and trees and flowers found at Rimba Ilmu and the Conservatory. The Rafflesasia (left) really looks cool huh? (and yes it was Sir Stamford Raffles who founded this largest Flower in the world in KK, Sabah)

(oh yes.. then we had one of our team members that quipped up .. oh yes Sir Stamford Raffles was the guy who founded Penang too rite? :) hehehehhhe .... and apparently she came from Penang! Aiyoh-nya!)

tree54.jpgtree55.jpg

Above is a special Orchid species, if you look at the base of the flower, you will see that it is shaped like a ladies shoe/sandal. Coooool huh!!

[The above was taken using the Macro function ... i like the Blurred Background effect]

Staff of Mandarin Oriental Plant Trees at Rimba Ilmu, UM

Today was our opportunity to give back to the environment. The Environmental Committee of Mandarin Oriental organized a Tree Planting day today at Rimba Ilmu of Universiti Malaya.

It was a great day today for planting trees. The sun was up and shining and a group of us were ready to get down and dirty! (yeah rite!)

This is our Environmental Logo.
Pretty cool huh? We had a contest recently, and this won the top prize.
It reads .... The good is beauty. The green is eternity.
Which was orginally written in Bahasa, and translated to English. (That's why its a bit ick-ish)
Yang elok itu Seni. Yang hijay itu Seri.

We started the day with a Breifing from an Officer of UM.
He took us thru the types of Rain Forest Trees in Malaysia.

Actually it was a great educational time. I learned that there were so many
species of trees in Malaysia that is totally unique to our country and can't be found
anywhere else in the world.

Hahahaa .... Veronica ... was like Hey .. don't let the Sun hurt me.

Where's the Shade ah? :)

We collected 11 Trees or rather saplings of various size and types.
With wheel barrows, trolleys, cangkuls and some other tools, we divided the
stuff and journeyed into the JUNGLE!

Ahhh ..... yes.. i actually did some work. This was one of the tallest trees
that we were gonna plant. It was really heavy and we had to use this Orange Trolley
to transport it into the Rimba Ilmu.

Its like a walk into the Jurassic Park.
Rimba Ilmu ... Knowledge Jungle ... Hmmmmm ....
Its a really good place to visit .. esp most of you reading this would most probably not know
that not too far from SS2 and Sect 14 .. in the North Western section of UM, there's a Rimba Ilmu. :) hehe ... its a good experience to step into this place.

Al the trees are labeled with their scientific names and with additional comments on them.

Here we go .... Planting a Tree by a Stream. (you can't really see the stream behind this team)
We had to learn to mark a circle in the ground, cangkul the earth out, had to ensure that the depth of the earth is even with the tree's base, remove the black plastic from the tree base, put it in, and slowly cover back the earth!!
Yay ... we planted a Tree!

Here's another effort to plant the tree by some other shurbs.
This is where we get down and dirty!!

Mashita showing us how to use the Cangkul.
Couldn't help take this shot as she chewed on a Saga Seed plant whilst
cangkul-ing earth to plant the tallest tree of the day.

Yups ... this is the tree that I pulled earlier.
Although it looked so thin and fine... this tree is actually 10 years old.
YUPS!!!
So the UM Officer asked us to come back and visit one day.
Yeah man ... we can come back when we are 60 years old to see the fruit of our labor! :) hehe

Another effort of planting a Tree at the end of the end of the trail.
We had walked like 40 minutes into the Rimba Ilmu.

Ohhh ... we met some kids from UNICEF who were volunteering their Saturday to help the environment as well. They were helping to pull out weeds from the stream.

They really worked hard .. jumping into the stream and pulling out the weeds.
Forming a human chain to pass the weeds to a central place for disposal!! Coool!!!
So all in all.... it was our Day for the Environment.
Great education on different plant species and the knowledge of our trees in Malaysia.
Let's go GREEEEEEEEEEEEN !!!
