Sun Ho's China Wine Music Video - A Controversy?

A friend called late today to ask us to google "Youtube China Wine". We were like why-la?

Anyway we googled and clicked on the Video "China Wine - SUN aka Geisha Official Release", and discovered that it was Sun Ho's music video with Wyclef Jean. She was dressed in a rather provocative manner with many dancers surrounding her in not much clothes. And we were like ... huh?? Is that Ho Yeow Sun?

Ho Yeow Sun is Pastor Kong Hee's wife. Ps Kong Hee has the largest church membership in Singapore, called City Harvest Church ... with over 24,000 in attendance each week! So when we looked at the video, we were like no-lah.. its not Sun. Then as we kept watching... oh ... it is!

Immediately controversial thoughts slipped through my mind. I was like why-lah... why is she doing a song like this and dressed like that?

Watch Sun's Performance on the China Wine Video

So what do you think of the video after watching it?

I remembered reading about Sun's past achievements and also her stand as a Christian. She had several controversies before but she has always stood her ground and proclaim her faith our in the open. And I was determined to find some answers to ensure that I was right about what and why she did the video. After googling some 3-4 times, i found Sun's blog explaining the song China Wine and her explanation was what i expected.

Here are some excerpts of her own explanations of China Wine, I've provided the full links at the bottom.

About the dance and the song “China Wine” …

The dance with the head roll originated from the infamous Jamaican dancehall move called the Dutty Wine. It was Wyclef’s idea to update the move with some Oriental hand movements (as seen in the video’s dance choreography).

The Dutty Wine (which stands for "Dirty Wind") is a song by Tony Matterhorn, a dancehall artist. "Dancehall" is not a place, but a style of Jamaican music and it has also become the name for a dance move where "legs move like a butterfly, and neck and posterior simultaneously rotate". And this dance move has become very popular in the world.

My involvement resulted in the China Wine – which is the Jamaican Dutty Wine infused with some Chinese/Asian elements. So contrary to what some think, China Wine does not refer to Chinese alcohol at all! It is a Chinese variation of Dutty Wine!

My new MV features Wyclef Jean, but also Tony Matterhorn (originator of Dutty Wine) and Elephant Man (another leading dancehall artist). So it is with the endorsement of famous dancehall artists that Wyclef and myself composed China Wine, making it the legitimate successor to Dutty Wine

About pushing my personal “limits” …

I am not for “pushing the limit” just for the sake of doing so. I’ve had super revealing dresses pushed upon me by sponsors for red-carpet events and I’ve had to push them right back at the stylist! But that’s the style and culture of Hollywood. It’s all second nature to them. There’s nothing too sexy or taboo about cleavage, that’s the norm for red-carpet style! (By the way, it is true also for Hong Kong and Taiwan these days!) If anything, I’m the “weird” one over there when I have to explain to them my reservations and restrictions!

Additionally, as a new artist in the US, I’m certainly not able to list out my demands and insist on a set of extreme limits for myself, especially when their culture is so different from ours. But I’m thankful that I have a management team that has been very supportive toward me and my personal beliefs, even when this results in differing opinions with them at times. They are the experts of what would work in the US. Even then, what works for them does not necessarily always work for me! So we’ve learned to talk, communicate and accommodate one another. I’m very happy with this arrangement.

Making these two music videos has pushed my limits, especially after 5 albums where I was packaged as a much quieter artist. Not only have I been challenged to dance the best I ever had, I’ve also been challenged in my stage presence and acting skills!

About the China Wine video and my different image from my past videos …

There’s a huge fundamental difference in the tastes between the US and Chinese music markets. It wasn’t intentional for me to “break out of my old image” … it was a necessity if I am to be at all relevant to the listeners there. Honestly, I had loads of reservations during the planning for the shoot and fittings with the video stylist, Petra, who also co-designs for Gwen Stefani. The production team and my management addressed all my personal concerns as well as their own (with regards to the effectiveness of the video in the US market), and the video you see is the result of that. I personally am very proud of the video and the effort that all parties involved put into its production.

About 2 months prior to filming, I had almost daily dance practices with one of reggae-rapper Sean Paul’s principal dancers. She is also my choreographer and has become a close friend. She taught me reggae and Jamaican dance styles and I’ve had to move muscles I never knew I even had!! You cannot believe how sore I was after just my first week of grueling practices! But again, I appreciate the challenge! I may not be any expert yet, but I’m excited to learn more and to stretch myself artistically.

About comments toward China Wine – Hot or Slutty?

The micro hot-pants and what we wore in the video are really more covered than what most girls are wearing today when they go to the gym! There is really nothing so shocking about them. I was truly shocked when, for my concert in Taiwan to plug my Embrace album, my Taiwanese stylist gave me a costume with even shorter shorts and I had to get them lengthened! That was so funny …

I am neither conservative nor liberal. I am just like any other contemporary girl living in the 21st century. I love many kinds of music and I want to express myself through both heartwarming ballads as well as fast-paced dance numbers. I’m also very much into fashion, and I like to look trendy and hip. I just believe that my whole “package” as an artist – which includes my music, dancing, dressing and performances – should be relevant to the modern, sophisticated and cosmopolitan society we live in.

About my creative control over the China Wine video …

I have “100% creative control” in the sense that I wasn’t forced by anyone to do anything against my will. Wayne is one of the nicest directors I’ve ever worked with. He would share his ideas for my role in the video and ask me if I was confident to pull it off. I told myself, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to work with the “best of the best” in the US music industry! You can be sure that I was going to give it my best shot. I mean how many people in the world even get the chance to do that?

Even though I’m a new artist there, the Americans work in an environment where we are all free to be creative. Everyone feels like a part of the team. Everyone’s ideas are valued. The entire production is only achievable because every person in the group plays their part incredibly well! For me, I was eased into the role because there was such an environment to work in. Wayne, Wyclef and my management provided me with the necessary coaches to help me pull off a very difficult and different act from what I have been used to. In the end, everyone is very proud of what we have achieved together! And everyone is very excited that the buzz around China Wine is growing day by day!

About my faith and the supposed “Buddha hand clasp” in the China Wine video …

Once again, the critics prove that they can turn nothing into something! ?

Indians and Thai people of all religions often clasp their hands in greetings. (My pastor often clasps his hands when he says hi to others!)

I am a Christian on and off stage. Whether I am a singer, counselor, dancer or actress, it doesn’t change what I believe in.

Never once did anyone on the entire production team (which included a number of Asians) ever think that any of the hand actions represent any religious movement. The dance steps were choreographed by an atheist who based her choreography on what she knew about the Asian culture. The handclasp is a familiar action in Thai, Japanese and other Asian cultures. She’s seen it in numerous non-religious Asian dance shows that she researched on specifically for the choreography of China Wine. There was absolutely nothing religious about those moves. Ha-ha, if it hadn't been mentioned it, this would never have even crossed my mind!

So after reading what Sun was trying to address, I am glad i found her blog and
that she was sharing so openly about it! I am really proud of Sun and for all
the different barriers she has broken in China and Taiwan and to reach out to
many young people!!! AND I pray that God will continue to bless and use her to
touch more lives and to reach out further - where normal believers can't. :)

any firsthand testomonies of those people who stay overseas who are truly helped by viewing this video or her career as a pop singer? it's easy to give monies to charity but how much of a positive influence she is to these people? she will only be inducing lust in those men only..

Shame on you Sun.... Never see any Pastor's wife dressed like that.:-). May be Pastor Kong failed to teach her.:-(
This is enough. Dont cheat again to CHC members. Sun is looking for popularity and money. Something wrong in Kong's family. Sun also a sole distributor of Ed Hardy clothing who put the satanic symbol like skull, snake, etc tattoo design in the clothes. They forget about the basic Christianity. Repent! before to late.

You guys shouldn't be so quick to judge. Perhaps you should pray for her and yourselves. That's the problem with the Christian Church today. That Judgemental way turns people off and away from the Church. Whether she stands or falls she does so before God. Let GOD be her judge. If you think she's fallen, PRAY FOR HER!!! It sickens me the way so-called Christians act today!!! Leave her to the Author & Finisher of her Faith! Thank GOD he doesn't treat us the way we treat each other!!!!

Her humility and honesty is more of an inspiration to seek a relationship with our Creator than your self-righteous Judging!! It's disgusting. Consider the Beam in your own eye before you rush to condemn someone else for the sliver in theirs. Judge ye not that ye be not judged. Isn't that in your Bible??????

God Bless You and Sun. God Help us all!!!

I have to say it must be very hard for Sun to live in two world. One is asking for holiness and the other one is asking for lust.
I just hope that she knows what is right and wrong.
At the end, the Heaven will not ask how many good deeds that we do, but how much we want to obey Him.
I truly hope Sun can differentiate which one is truly His vision and her own-self vision. God bless her.

Let not judge Sun Ho and what she chose to do from the perspective of "holier than you" attitude.

We are asked to judged all things correctly by the Word of God.

So, let turn to some verses in just one book (amongst so many others in the Bible) and see what it has to say:

Ephesian 4:17So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. 18They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. 19Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more.

20You, however, did not come to know Christ that way. 21Surely you heard of him and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. 22You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

Turn on this light on our lives and the lives of all those who professed to love Jesus Christ and to follow Him.

The conclusions one can draw from Sun Ho and whether her actions are in fact following and honoring Christ will be clear as day.

Sure, "don't judge her". But that's not what at least I am trying to do here. I'm simply expressing concern about the influence she has over people's views on christianity and things like that. It's her responsibilty as a christian to not only care for her own opinons but for those of others.

My point is that it may not seem like much to some but that kind of dancing and not having very much clothes in the environment that is in that video, is generally considered a bit sexually provocative. She says that she has to do things like these to get accepted in the US. But that is not true at all, christians can't just go and do things that (if you really study the bible) are wrong just so that people will be friends with you.

First off, people have respect for you if you really stand up for something.

Secondly, God is with us. If his plan is that she should be a world-famous artist (which I think it is) then he will see to that she can become one without disobeying his words.

Finally, even though I'm in no way saying that we should be aggressive /judgemental against people and say "I don't do that and since you do you're a bad person". I think that as long as we're not like that, it's alright if people don't like us because of what we think (our job as christians is not to please everybody because that's simply impossible).

God bless you and I will pray over this!

Pastor Sun, you really don't need to justify yourself. You can dance all you want, dress in however you want and chase your hollywood dreams in anyhow you want. That's your business. But please don't take us for a fool that you are calling what you are doing is biblical. I love your video and the way those girls touch your body, as if it wasn't sexual. It is to lesbians. Can't fool God. What is He saying about this? Would He want His children dressed like that, whether you admit it or not, it's sexual. Pictures can't lie. You can talk all you want and justify. But you and all the Christians know better. Would we want our husbands to see that? Would we let our children see that? That's up to you but I would not.

For those whom said Christains are judgemental... just remember they abide by God's absolute standards as best they can... if you think God cannot be judgement about sinful, just remember His wrath .. for those whom condone depravity and promiscusnus, remember Sodom and Gomorohh....

How can one not be judgemental about people who induce lust and support promiscusness...

Im not judging
but God is..
A real christian won't act the way she is acting. It's a pity that she backslipped back into the world. May God give her knowledge and strenghts to come back to His Kingdom. It's never too late, our God is a good God, who forgives if they repent.

Amen

BiblicalJoe,
The world out there is not so blind to such an extent that they cannot see and perceive the hypocrisy on what Sun Ho did within video (and elsewhere) clearly contradict the bible which is the Word of the Holy God whom she professes to believe in.

There are many people who profess to believe the Bible and the God of the Bible and yet live like they really don't believe the Bible but are slaves of Satan and the world. In reality, they deny God and simply love the world and do not love the Holy and Righteous God of the Bible and His Word.

However, it is another thing for you to try to mock the Bible, God's Holy Words, by making up words and references to what is clearly not written in the Bible.

I showed this video to some of my friend who are both believers and non-believers. One would have to be blind to say that this is not something meant to stimulate sexually. The non Christian guys recognized it immediately. You have a ocuple "grinding" on there which is basically simulating sex. Just the subtitle AKA Geisha - what is a geisha anyway - a high price call girl and basically the entire video simulates a whore house. At the end of the video one guy leads a girl away calling her a b**** - which is both degrading to women and also is a descriptive term applied to a woman who is sexually free to do it with anyone and everyone. I am not judging anyone - that is not my place. However the Bible does say that by their fruits you shall no them. Severla of even non-Christian friends asked to stop after about a minute or too - they indicated if they wanted to watch semi-porn they would jsut go and get the real thing. If you think that the video is "modest", righteous" and "glorifyinh to God" - which asChristians is what are lives are called to be - then go ahead and watch it and support it. One day though God will judge all of us for the things that we do and the things that we watch - and He is the only one worthy to judge. However I would not want to be in Sun Ho's shoes when he asks her about his performance in summer wine - I seriously do not think when that is on the big screen in heaven recounting her deeds - that she is going to quite as proud as she is in her shallow defense - but instead I would guess she may be hanging her head in shame. I cannot seriously imagine Jesus watching this video.

for sure, this is giving bad name to christianity.

there will be a few reactions
1. the othr faith will condemn
2. the majority of christians will be ashamed of her
3. her cult city harvest followers will quote some bible verses to make the wrong right.

As for her, she will continue to align herself to the entertaining world...... I am not surprised more revealing acts from her soon. And her upright husband will stand in the congregration, and thru his gifted tongue, will start pulling verses from the book. And thousands will believe.

Anyway, The video was smoking hot.. wait a min.. is that why the Sun came... Ouch...

Note to Self.. "get back to the topic"

I had a furious exchange of views with another brother in christ who is supportive of her dressing (he said it is adopting the culture) and her dancing. Everywhere you go, her behaviour provokes strong reactions and controversies from both Christians and non-Christians. To me, she is just too absorbed in her dream of being a world artist, never mind her Saviour. In fact, I don't think her husband minds her endeavour, because he is very busy doing business (to him he is doing business because Jesus was a businessman). In the end it is all about money. Go to their church website, and you will see, advertisements placed by even cosmetics company!

My friend and I were recently discussing about how we as human beings are so hooked onto electronics. Reading this post makes me think back to that discussion we had, and just how inseparable from electronics we have all become.

I don't mean this in a bad way, of course! Ethical concerns aside... I just hope that as memory becomes less expensive, the possibility of copying our brains onto a digital medium becomes a true reality. It's one of the things I really wish I could encounter in my lifetime.

Kong Hee must step down inorder to allow his wife to pursue her career as a pop singer. A pastor cannot serve two masters.

Anonymous said...

Wow..sooner or later, Pastor Sun Ho will engage in another new MTV to show God's act of procreation.....

Anonymous said...

Yes, we shouldn't judge a person...but can we imagine for once if Jesus is here looking at her MTV and outfit together with the little children of the world....

Sorry CHC members but I just can't imagine Jesus nodding his head in approval or speak up for her hypocrite behavior.

And yes, keep buying her album. Thats what Pastor Kong hee and Sun wans, not Jesus. So don't incorporate any biblical verses to support that propanganda.
